In an exciting development for young talent in football, Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly and Chelsea’s new signing Liam Delap have been named among the nominees for the prestigious 2024/25 PFA Young Player of the Year award. This award, which recognizes exceptional young players across the league, is particularly meaningful as it is a peer-driven accolade, being voted on by the players themselves at the conclusion of each footballing season. The much-anticipated winner will be unveiled at a special ceremony scheduled to take place in Manchester on August 19.

The shortlist, which comprises six outstanding young talents, also features Bournemouth’s full-back Milos Kerkez and former Cherries center-back Dean Huijsen. In addition, Arsenal’s rising star Ethan Nwaneri and Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers have also made the list. This diverse group showcases a variety of skills and potentials, highlighting the depth of young talent present in the English football scene.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s nomination comes on the heels of a breakout campaign during which he rose to prominence as a left-back for Arsenal. His performance this season not only demonstrated his defensive capabilities but also his ability to contribute on the offensive front. Notably, Lewis-Skelly marked his international career by scoring on his England debut against Albania earlier this year, making significant strides in both club and country representation.

Lewis-Skelly is not the only Arsenal player making waves this season. His teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who made history by becoming the youngest player to ever appear in the Premier League at the tender age of 15 back in 2022, had a remarkable season as well. Nwaneri showcased his development and maturity on the pitch by netting an impressive nine goals in 37 appearances, while serving in a pivotal role as an understudy to the esteemed Bukayo Saka. His continuous improvement and performance under pressure solidified his position among the top young talents in the league.

Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers also deserves a mention, as he recorded an impressive tally of 14 goals and 15 assists across all competitions. His contributions played a crucial role in Villa’s successful season, where they not only secured a spot in the UEFA Europa League but also made significant progress in the UEFA Champions League by reaching the quarter-finals. Furthermore, Rogers helped his team advance to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, reinforcing his value to the side and underscoring why he has been nominated for this esteemed award.

Adding to the intrigue of this award are comments made by former footballers, including Jack Wilshere and Owen Hargreaves, who have highlighted Lewis-Skelly’s impressive ability to “rise to every occasion.” They pinpointed this characteristic as one of the young player’s greatest attributes, emphasizing the importance of mental strength and adaptability in the fast-paced environment of professional football. Such recognition from seasoned players further underscores the impact that Lewis-Skelly has made this season.

The platform for young players like Lewis-Skelly, Nwaneri, Rogers, and their peers signifies the changing landscape of football, where clubs are increasingly investing in young talent. With expanding opportunities, these players are not just competing for awards; they are shaping the future narratives of their clubs and the sport itself. The 2024/25 PFA Young Player of the Year award not only celebrates individual accomplishments but also shines a light on the bright future of English football, where young prospects are making their mark and inspiring the next generation of players.
