Tesla’s Breakthrough in China: Closer to Full-Self Driving with Baidu Partnership

    CNN News Report

In a major development, Tesla has reached an agreement with Chinese tech giant Baidu to upgrade its mapping software, bringing the company one step closer to launching full-self driving (FSD) technology in China. Baidu announced on Saturday that it will be providing lane-level navigation services for Tesla cars, offering detailed information to enhance safety on the roads.

Experts had previously highlighted the importance of securing a mapping and navigation deal with Baidu for Tesla CEO Elon Musk to obtain government approval for the rollout of the FSD software in China. With Baidu’s support, Tesla’s navigation system can now provide lane-level guidance, a significant upgrade from its previous road-level guidance.

Baidu has been providing mapping services to Tesla since 2020, but previous services were limited to road-level information. However, with the new partnership, Tesla users in urban areas in China now have access to detailed road information for the first time.

This collaboration with Baidu is crucial for Tesla as Chinese regulations require self-driving systems to obtain mapping qualifications from licensed Chinese companies before operating on public roads. By teaming up with Baidu, Tesla can now collect surrounding data necessary for its self-driving technology to operate in China.

The news of the software upgrade went viral on Chinese social media on Monday, with users expressing excitement over the improved navigation system. One Weibo user commented, “After the system upgrade, I no longer need to use my mobile phone to navigate. Tesla’s own navigation system can finally be used.”

The introduction of the FSD system in China could potentially provide a revenue boost for Tesla, which has been facing challenges in the Chinese market. In an effort to boost sales, Tesla recently slashed prices across its product lines in China amidst slowing demand and increased competition.

CNN has reached out to Tesla for comment, while Baidu has declined further statements. The partnership between Tesla and Baidu signifies a significant advancement in the development of self-driving technology and has the potential to impact the global automotive industry.
