On Tuesday, left-leaning Taylor Swift fans, along with prominent figures like Carole King, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, came together for a Zoom call organized by the group “Swifties for Kamala.” The aim of the call was to rally fans of the pop superstar to support Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
Although Swift herself was not affiliated with the group and did not participate in the call, the event garnered significant attention. The group “Swifties for Kamala” has amassed around a quarter of a million followers on social media platforms and raised over $13,000 for the Harris-Walz campaign since President Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Harris.
More than 26,000 participants registered to join the call, which featured remarks from Sen. Ed Markey, Rep. Chris Deluzio, Rep. Becca Balint, and Anderson Clayton, the chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party.
Irene Kim, the co-founder of “Swifties for Kamala,” expressed hope that Harris or her running mate, Tim Walz, might join the call, but neither were present at the event.
During the call, Sen. Elizabeth Warren addressed the group, praising their resilience and their ability to stand up to bullies. Carole King also made an appearance and sang her favorite Swift song, “Shake It Off,” encouraging everyone to use their voice in the lead-up to the election.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand shared some Swiftie-themed jokes and emphasized the importance of women’s voices in the campaign. Meanwhile, Markey discussed climate change, making reference to Swift’s summer home in Rhode Island.
Organizers also called for donations in amounts that held significance for Swift, such as $13 or $19.89, as well as $47 in reference to the next president. The call was a show of solidarity and support for Kamala Harris, with various speakers highlighting the importance of standing up for what is right and using their voices to make a difference in the upcoming election.
