Second Lady Usha Vance Shares Heartfelt Mother’s Day Plans and Balancing Act of Family Life in the Public Eye

As the nation celebrates Mother’s Day in 2025, Usha Vance, the second lady of the United States, took a moment to reflect on the significance of this cherished holiday. In an exclusive conversation with Fox News Digital, Usha shared her perspective on motherhood and her dual responsibilities as both a mom and the second lady. This candid exchange provided insights into the balancing act that modern parents face, particularly those in the public eye.

Usha Vance emphasized that, compared to her previous full-time role in the private sector, her current position affords her more control over her schedule. She noted that the freedom to structure her time has made her balancing act somewhat easier. Despite this newfound flexibility, she pointed out the unique challenges that come with raising children under public scrutiny. “While I certainly miss working,” she acknowledged, “I am grateful that I have the time to ensure that our home life is as normal and stable as possible.” This reflection highlights a universal struggle for working parents, particularly those with the added complexity of public life.

In discussing her formative experiences, Mrs. Vance mentioned her admiration for her mother, Lakshmi Chilukuri. While her mother may not have frequently offered direct advice, Usha learned invaluable lessons through her example. “One of her gifts as a parent is always making me feel like I have her full attention, no matter how busy she might be,” she remarked. Usha strives to replicate this attentive nurturing with her own children. The couple’s children—Ewan, 7, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3—are now a primary focus in Usha’s life.

The Vances’ journey together began at Yale Law School, where both Usha and her husband, Vice President JD Vance, first met. They tied the knot in 2014, and since then, their partnership has flourished, culminating in their current roles of influence. While exploring her personal history in motherhood, Usha noted the importance of family traditions. She participated in an early Mother’s Day celebration with military moms at the White House, a gathering hosted by First Lady Melania Trump alongside President Donald Trump, to honor the sacrifices made by military families.

Reflecting on the actual Mother’s Day on Sunday, Usha expressed her intent to keep it simple and family-oriented: “We will have a quiet day, with a family hike and dessert baked by JD.” It’s heartwarming to know that her husband and children have planned to whip up a special hazelnut brown butter cake for her, showcasing the personal touches that make family life meaningful amidst their public duties. In a humorous twist, Usha mentioned that she might have already received some early Mother’s Day gifts made by her kids at preschool, emphasizing the excitement they felt in presenting their surprises early.

Prior to her role as the second lady, Usha excelled as a litigator, having clerked for notable figures like Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Brett Kavanaugh at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. However, once her husband was nominated as Donald Trump’s running mate, she departed from her position at the Munger, Tolles, and Olson law firm. This change has allowed her to adapt her priorities and focus on family life while still engaging with public responsibilities.

During a previous interview with Ainsley Earhardt, Usha reflected on her parents’ relaxed approach to her upbringing, noting, “As long as I was working really hard at things that I cared about, that’s what mattered.” This foundational belief in the value of hard work is something she undoubtedly is instilling in her own children as she continues to navigate her role both in her family and in the public sector.

This Mother’s Day stands as a tribute not only to Usha Vance as a mother but also to her journey alongside her husband, Vice President JD Vance, and their aspirations for a balanced, loving family life amidst the demands of national service.
