Marcus Smith Calls Lions Tour Selection a ‘Dream Come True’ After Stellar Performance Against Gloucester

Marcus Smith expressed elation at his selection for the Lions Tour, describing it as a “dream come true.” The young fly-half showcased his prowess during a convincing 38-19 victory for Harlequins against Gloucester at Allianz Stadium. This win not only dampened Gloucester’s aspirations for the play-offs but also served as a testament to Smith’s capabilities as he competes with established players like Finn Russell and Fin Smith for the coveted Lions No. 10 jersey.

In a post-match interview on TNT Sports with former rugby star Ugo Monye, Smith candidly shared the mix of emotions he felt leading up to the announcement of his selection. He recalled the nerve-wracking wait, revealing, “I was a bit of a mess to be honest.” Having had a busy training session earlier that day, he rushed to prepare for the announcement, all the while feeling the weight of his anticipation. Smith’s family was by his side during this pivotal moment, adding a layer of warmth to an otherwise anxiety-inducing experience. “Sitting there waiting to hear my name was a special feeling,” he noted, highlighting the shared joy with his mother and girlfriend.

Despite this personal triumph, Harlequins’ chances of qualifying for the play-offs remain tenuous. Smith acknowledged that the club must look towards a brighter future, as a top-four finish seems increasingly unlikely. However, he maintained a positive perspective, recognizing the valuable lessons learned throughout the season. “It’s been an up and down season for us, we’re quite disappointed,” he admitted, but also emphasized the pride in playing at Twickenham, the iconic home of English rugby. In his reflection, Smith acknowledged, “We owe it to ourselves and owe it to the fans who turn up every week.”

The emotional weight of the season has not been lost on Smith, who expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had on the field alongside teammates he considers close friends. “It’s nice to get five points against a very good Gloucester team,” he concluded optimistically, looking ahead to next season.

The match itself showcased Harlequins at their finest, with notable contributions from players like Murley, who scored a remarkable hat-trick in just 39 minutes, marking a clear signal that the team is finding its rhythm. Commentator Nick Mullins drew attention to Smith’s Lions selection during discussions with rugby analysts Austin Healey and David Flatman. Both were supportive of Smith’s inclusion, with Flatman confidently asserting, “He’s magic, he’s absolutely magic.” He stressed the importance of having players like Smith on the field, arguing that his ability to disrupt defenses is unmatched.

Healey, while acknowledging Smith’s talent, mentioned that George Ford of Sale Sharks might have been deserving of a spot in the Lions squad as well. “I don’t want to demean his selection,” he clarified, indicating respect for Smith’s achievement. He also speculated on possible injuries Smith might be managing but emphasized that when fit, he is a formidable player.

As Harlequins look to the future, they will face the formidable Exeter Chiefs next, followed by an away match against the Bristol Bears, a game with significant implications for playoff positions. In this tightly contested league, every match counts, and Harlequins could play a crucial role in determining the fate of other teams vying for playoff spots. With the Gallagher Premiership finale showcased on TNT Sports and discovery+, rugby fans will be eagerly watching as Smith and his teammates continue their journey, balancing personal aspirations with the collective goals of Harlequins.
