Lions Legend Ian McGeechan Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis: A Call for Early Testing

Sir Ian McGeechan, a legendary figure in the rugby world known for his extensive contributions as both player and coach, has announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The news, delivered by the former Scotland and British and Irish Lions head coach, emphasizes not only his personal battle but also serves as a call to awareness for men’s health issues, particularly urging others to seek regular medical tests.

Born in Yorkshire to a Scottish father, McGeechan had a storied playing career, earning 32 caps for Scotland, during which he captained the team on nine occasions. He was part of the British and Irish Lions squad during two historic tours, winning in 1974 against South Africa and again in 1977. His transition to coaching was marked by even greater achievements, including leading Scotland to a Grand Slam in 1990 during the Five Nations Championship and the Lions to series victories in 1989 and 1997.

As of now, the 78-year-old McGeechan is serving as the consultant director of rugby for the Championship club Doncaster Knights. His commitment to rugby remains steadfast even as he undergoes treatment; he recently completed a six-week course of radiotherapy. In a statement to the Telegraph, McGeechan expressed, “I don’t want to make a big thing of it, but it is important to get the message out about urging people to go and get tested.”

He particularly emphasized the importance of awareness regarding health screenings to the players at Doncaster Knights, advocating that they prioritize their health and be proactive in seeking regular check-ups. Despite his diagnosis, McGeechan remains optimistic, stating, “I have an opportunity here at Doncaster and I have a good family, and I just don’t think any differently. I am trying to do all the right things for my health and fitness.”

McGeechan’s legacy in rugby is monumental. He first tasted success as the Lions head coach in 1989, orchestrating a thrilling series victory in Australia. Although he faced challenges in 1993 with a series loss in New Zealand, he redeemed himself in 1997 by orchestrating a remarkable win against the world champions South Africa. This particular tour was famously captured in the film ‘Living with Lions,’ showcasing McGeechan’s passion and approach as he delivered stirring pre-match speeches that inspired his team.

His coaching tenure began when he was appointed as Scotland’s head coach in 1988, where he masterminded the country’s most recent Grand Slam win just two years later, thanks to a memorable 13-7 victory over England. In his club coaching roles, McGeechan found further success, notably winning the prestigious European Cup with Wasps in 2007 and the English Premiership the following year.

In addition to these accomplishments, McGeechan also returned for a fourth stint as Lions head coach in 2009, leading the team through another series against South Africa, which ended in defeat. Notably, he had previously contributed as an assistant coach during the Lions’ 2005 tour to New Zealand.

As McGeechan navigates this personal challenge, his story serves as a reminder of the importance of health awareness, particularly in men, and the significance of proactive healthcare measures. His dedication to rugby, combined with his ongoing efforts to encourage health checks, illustrates both a rich sporting legacy and a commitment to the wellbeing of others.

The rugby community and fans around the world are rallying behind him, eager to support the man who has given so much to the sport. With his influential voice, McGeechan continues to inspire as he champions good health alongside his enduring passion for rugby union.
