Israel’s PM Expresses Doubts on Fate of Three Captive Hostages as Tensions Escalate in Gaza

In recent developments regarding the state of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed uncertainty over the condition of three of the 24 hostages believed to be alive. This revelation came amid a complex and evolving backdrop of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Netanyahu confirmed that while 21 hostages are accounted for and presumed alive, the status of the remaining trio remains ambiguous. This statement diverged from earlier assertions made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently claimed at a White House event that all 24 hostages were alive, but did not provide further details or a source for his assertion.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an advocacy group representing the families of the hostages, has voiced their concerns and demanded more clarity on the situation. In light of rising tensions and the continuing military operations in Gaza, the forum petitioned Netanyahu to reconsider plans for escalating the military offensive. They urged the Prime Minister to negotiate further with Hamas to secure the release of the remaining hostages, which includes both the living and deceased.

In a video message shared following Trump’s remarks, Netanyahu reaffirmed the government’s position, stating, “We know with certainty that 21 hostages are alive. There are three more regarding whom there’s uncertainty about whether they are alive.” His comments highlighted the emotional strain and urgency felt by the families of the hostages, who are advocating for a ceasefire to prioritize the safe return of their loved ones.

Israel’s Chief Military Spokesman, Brigadier General Effie Defrin, earlier hinted at a contradictory stance by suggesting that the primary objective of the military campaign is to secure the return of hostages while simultaneously focusing on the dismantling of Hamas’s operational capabilities in the region. This echoed back to an internal report that suggested the prioritization of military objectives over humanitarian concerns. Reports from Israel’s Haaretz newspaper indicated that among military leaders, the directive to defeat Hamas remains the foremost priority, with hostage recovery seemingly relegated to a secondary position.

Amidst these discussions, the Israeli military announced plans for an expansion of its operations in Gaza. The strategy reportedly includes a prolonged seizure of territories, which would entail the forced displacement of Palestinians to the south of the Strip, while concurrently assuming control of aid distribution efforts. These actions have faced significant criticism from various humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations, which have expressed concerns about the potentially dire humanitarian outcomes of such military strategies.

The conflict escalated following the harrowing series of attacks conducted by Hamas on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and leading to the abduction of 251 individuals into Gaza. Since the commencement of hostilities, Israel has managed to secure the release of 196 hostages, 147 of whom were returned alive, chiefly through temporary ceasefire agreements with Hamas.

As the situation continues to develop, the repercussions are profound. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, casualties in Gaza have surpassed 52,653 individuals during the ongoing conflict, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis that has unfolded. Since the resumption of hostilities after a temporary ceasefire lapsed on March 18, 2025, the conflict has intensified with over 2,500 reported deaths in Gaza alone.

In essence, the complex interplay between military objectives and humanitarian imperatives remains a pressing concern. The ongoing plight of hostages, the families’ desperate calls for resolution, and the broader implications of military strategy continue to fuel the urgency for diplomatic conversations and potential resolutions. The interplay of these elements paints a stark picture of the human tragedy at the heart of the Gaza conflict and emphasizes the critical need for concerted efforts towards peace and the restoration of affected lives.
