Elon Musk Faces Growing Backlash: Protests Erupt Nationwide Amid Feud with Trump and Falling Tesla Sales!

The ongoing demonstrations against tech billionaire Elon Musk signify a notable shift in public sentiment towards one of the world’s most influential figures. The situation has escalated particularly since Musk vacated his role as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and engaged in a public feud with former President Donald Trump regarding a controversial policy bill, whimsically dubbed the “big, beautiful bill.” This bill has become a focal point of contention, leading to widespread discourse on the implications of Musk’s political endorsement and actions.

Musk, who is not only the CEO of Tesla but also a significant supporter of Trump’s political ambitions—having contributed an astounding $288 million to his 2024 presidential campaign—has expressed strong disapproval of the recent tax and domestic policy bill. He labeled it a “disgusting abomination,” which came shortly after he announced his withdrawal from the DOGE initiative aimed at slashing federal expenses. As the tensions mounted, Trump retaliated with threats to diminish government contracts awarded to Musk’s companies. Musk countered by asserting that Trump’s victory in the previous election would not have been possible without his backing.

The growing anti-Musk sentiment has manifested clearly on the streets, notably just outside retail locations for Tesla. Over the weekend, around 60 protests were organized across various cities including Delray Beach, Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; and Decatur, Georgia. These protests form part of the Tesla Takedown movement, which took shape in mid-February in the context of Musk’s involvement with DOGE. In the Georgetown district of Washington, DC, a crowd numbering approximately 30 gathered outside a Tesla showroom, braving inclement weather. However, attendance for the protest was significantly lower than the previous week’s rally in Rockville, Maryland, which drew nearly 200 participants, reflecting the impact of adverse weather conditions and concurrent Pride Month events on turnout.

Local co-organizers, Melissa Knutson and Sara Steffens, attributed the lower numbers to these factors but insisted that their commitment to the movement remains unwavering. “This is not over because (Musk) decided to go home with his tail between his legs,” Knutson proclaimed, emphasizing the persistence of their cause. The Tesla Takedown movement, through its official channels, has urged individuals to divest from Tesla by selling their vehicles and shares, claiming that doing so is crucial for safeguarding lives and preserving democratic values.

Financial indicators reflect a troubling trend for Tesla, marked by a 13% drop in sales during the first quarter of the year—the most significant decrease in the company’s history. Additionally, Tesla’s stock price has plummeted roughly 14% within the week and is nearly down by 47% since its peak value of $488.54 in December 2022. Steffens expressed encouragement at the stock’s downturn, stating that it serves as evidence that the current climate is anything but normal.

Musk has attributed the decline in sales primarily to broader economic challenges and lowered consumer confidence, noting that competitive electric vehicle (EV) sales have surged. Despite the larger context, neither Tesla nor one of the original Tesla Takedown organizers, Alex Winter, responded to media outreach for comment. Observers from within the Takedown movement assert that Musk’s exit from DOGE, his controversial relationship with Trump, and the downturn in sales and stock prices do not signify an end for their movement anytime soon.

Looking toward future actions, organizers have proclaimed further protests scheduled for Musk’s birthday, advocating for renewed commitment to their cause. Knutson articulated the sentiment that the movement will continue to pressure against what they perceive as a “billionaire takeover.” Some activists have even urged pension funds to reassess their investments in Tesla, citing the numerous criticisms raised by long-term institutional investors.

Many participants in the Georgetown protests showed resolute determination to continue advocating against Musk regardless of his actions or departures. Jeanne Ferris, a seasoned protester, expressed disbelief that Musk could fully distance himself from political influence, stating that his “tendrils” are still intertwined with governmental operations. Each demonstrator brought their cause to the forefront; for some like James Decherd, attending protests has become a means of community engagement while mobilizing support for shared grievances.

While the dynamics between Musk and Trump have prompted speculation regarding their future collaborations, many believe that the foundation of public discontent against economic disparities and corporate influence will sustain momentum for grassroots movements like Tesla Takedown. Observers recognize that as protests evolve, the relations between billionaires in the political sphere will remain complex as public advocacy for democratically accountable governance continues to gain traction.
