Two new members have officially joined the prestigious EGOT club.
During the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul secured the “E” they needed for their EGOT status, joining a select group of around 20 artists who have achieved Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards.
The duo was recognized with an Emmy for best original music and lyrics for their composition “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” The song was featured in the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building,” alongside collaborators Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Pasek and Paul previously claimed an Oscar for best original song for “City of Stars,” from the acclaimed film “La La Land.”
The Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen” earned them accolades including a Grammy for best musical theater album and a Tony for best original score. Additionally, they received a Grammy for best compilation soundtrack for “The Greatest Showman” and another Tony for best musical for “A Strange Loop.”
Notably, season three of “Only Murders in the Building” was prominently set on Broadway.
Reflecting on their work for the series, Paul mentioned, “We came up with a huge long list of possibilities of what to pull from, here’s our palette that we want to work with lyrically and then going about telling the story that we had really broken down pretty thoroughly with [showrunner] John Hoffman. And then it was just the fun of executing it, finding our favorite lines, how can we keep besting each other, besting that line. It was a joy and certainly something that I know we would never have come up with on our own,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Only Murders in the Building” features stars such as Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez.
