Bellingham Brothers: Jobe Sets Out to Forge His Own Path at Dortmund

Jobe Bellingham is stepping into the professional spotlight, embarking on a promising career at Borussia Dortmund at the tender age of 19. He is following closely in the footsteps of his older brother, Jude Bellingham, who made a significant move to the same club at just 17. Nonetheless, Jobe is determined to carve out his unique identity in the football realm, distancing himself from the inevitable comparisons to his illustrious sibling.

Having made an impact in the Birmingham City academy and the Championship, Jobe recently played a crucial role in Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League. However, instead of competing in the English top flight next season, he will be elevating his career by signing with Dortmund. The agreement, reportedly worth up to £31 million, cements Jobe as the club’s second-most expensive signing, trailing only Ousmane Dembélé, and marks Sunderland’s record sale.

Dortmund is familiar territory for the Bellingham family, particularly due to Jude’s successful stint at the club. Jude’s move in July 2020 became pivotal for both him and the club. He made 132 appearances, won the DFB Pokal in 2021, and had an unforgettable journey that culminated in a significant transfer to Real Madrid, where he has since found continued success, securing various titles including the Champions League and La Liga.

While Jude’s footballing style sees him primarily positioned as a number ten, Jobe’s versatility allows him to excel as a defensive or box-to-box midfielder, showcasing his diverse skill set. His first season with Sunderland included various roles, even stepping into a forward position, but he firmly believes that his most effective play occurs when operating from the midfield. During the 2024-25 season, he made 43 appearances for Sunderland, scoring four goals and contributing three assists—a testament to his developing talent in a competitive league.

Despite the inevitable comparisons with Jude, Jobe’s distinctive journey is underscored by his desire to create his identity on the pitch. Tony Mowbray, former Sunderland manager, emphasized that Jobe aims not to live in the shadow of his brother’s legacy but instead to establish himself as a capable footballer in his own right. Acknowledging the differences in their playing styles, Jobe expressed his enjoyment in being a dynamic box-to-box midfielder, where he can exhibit both offensive zeal and robust defensive skills.

Jobe’s move to Dortmund is not merely a step up the professional ladder; it’s also viewed as an opportunity to thrive in the Bundesliga, which many believe sits comfortably between the Championship and the Premier League in terms of competitiveness. Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini noted this transition could offer Jobe a chance to grow in a less pressurized environment, with financial benefits accompanying his move abroad.

Both brothers share a common origin, having grown up in Stourbridge in the West Midlands while progressing through Birmingham’s academy. There is a growing hope that Jobe and Jude may one day don the England national jersey together. After Jude made his England debut shortly after joining Dortmund, he has since earned 43 caps, contributing significantly to the national team.

Jude has vocalized his aspirations for Jobe to reach similar heights, specifically hoping to see them play together for England, an opportunity that would fulfill the biggest dream for both of them. Their bond transcends football, underscoring a shared commitment to supporting one another’s aspirations. Jude stated, “As long as he’s happy, that’s all I really care about,” revealing a profound familial connection amidst their professional ambitions.

Looking ahead, Jobe’s potential match against Jude is a tantalizing prospect, as both players’ clubs are set to compete in upcoming international tournaments. The chance for brotherly rivalry on the football stage, particularly in significant events like the Club World Cup or other major championships, could indeed solidify their narratives within the sport, further building on their family legacy. Both Jude and Jobe are not just players but influential figures shaping the future of English football.
