In a recent revelation, Brydon Carse, the 29-year-old England bowler, disclosed that he contemplated undergoing an amputation of his second toe to alleviate persistent injury issues. This drastic consideration arose after he developed severe cuts on the toe of his left foot, injuries exacerbated by the strain of his bowling technique. The health complications surrounding this injury resulted in infections that significantly hampered Carse’s performance during England’s white-ball tour of India earlier this year and ultimately sidelined him for the Champions Trophy as well as the subsequent three-month recovery period.
Carse, who plays for Durham, shared his thoughts on the injury, stating, “At one stage I was going to bed thinking ‘I think I could actually do this – I think I could get rid of my second toe’, but then the medical staff advised against it for balance purposes.” He humorously mentioned that he tries not to talk about his toe in the changing room anymore, as it has become a running joke among his teammates.
The injuries that led Carse to this point are not uncommon among fast bowlers, often resulting from the repeated impact on their feet while they bowl. Fast bowlers often face various foot-related issues, prompting some to modify their footwear to prevent injuries. In Carse’s case, it was speculated that he might require plastic surgery after the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, but doctors ultimately advised that a period of rest would be the best remedy.
The significance of the toe was especially highlighted by Carse’s previous consultations with medical professionals who explained the crucial role of the second toe in maintaining balance during his bowling motions. As an alternative to amputation, Carse adopted several changes, including switching to narrower boots and using new insoles—methods aimed at alleviating pressure on the affected toe and preventing further complications.
The toll of the injury on Carse’s professional commitments has been considerable. He had to withdraw from a lucrative £100,000 contract with the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the complications from his toe, delaying his appearances in the County Championship until May. Despite these setbacks, he regained his form and contributed to England’s impressive 3-0 series victory over the West Indies in recent one-day internationals.
Carse’s performance continues to improve as he made his Test debut in Pakistan last October and has already established himself as one of the frontline fast bowlers for the England team after taking an impressive 27 wickets in just five Test matches. Following a brief absence due to injury, he has now been included in England’s squad for the first Test against India announced recently. He is also set to play in the first of three T20 matches against West Indies, scheduled at his home ground in Chester-le-Street.
In addition to Carse’s situation, England opener Phil Salt is set to miss the upcoming T20 matches against the West Indies due to paternity leave. Salt returned home from the IPL for the birth of his child but managed to rejoin his team in India for the final match that resulted in a victory for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. As Salt attends to family matters, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has been named as his replacement in the squad.
All-rounder Jacob Bethell is also part of the squad and has shown his potential by opening for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. The upcoming series will commence with a match in Chester-le-Street, followed by fixtures in Bristol and Southampton. The West Indies are looking to strengthen their lineup with the return of key players such as Andre Russell, Jason Holder, and Romario Shepherd, despite the absence of Nicholas Pooran, who opted out following his IPL commitments.
The captain of the West Indies, Shai Hope, acknowledged the impact of Pooran’s choice but expressed confidence in their current squad, emphasizing their focus on utilizing the talent available to them for upcoming challenges. As England continues their campaign under new captain Harry Brook, the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the outcomes of these high-stakes matches.
