Colapinto Takes the Wheel: Alpine Shifts Gears with Driver Change!

In the ever-evolving landscape of Formula 1, recent developments have seen Argentine driver Franco Colapinto stepping in to replace Jack Doohan for the Alpine team over the next five Grand Prix races. This strategic decision, announced on May 7, 2025, comes as part of Alpine’s efforts to optimize their driver lineup ahead of the crucial 2026 season. Doohan, who had been racing for Alpine since the closing of the last season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, has yet to score any points, which may have influenced this pivotal change.

Colapinto, who previously raced with Williams for nine races in the previous year, is expected to debut alongside teammate Pierre Gasly during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix set to take place from May 16 to 18 at the iconic Imola circuit. In addition, the Alpine team has indicated that a reevaluation of the driver situation will occur before the highly anticipated British Grand Prix scheduled for July 4 to 6. This period is earmarked for Colapinto to showcase his abilities and demonstrate his worthiness to remain a contender for the seat in the highly competitive world of Formula 1 racing.

Alpine’s executive adviser, Flavio Briatore, elaborated on the rationale behind the decision, expressing that the team’s review of the initial races of the season informed their choice to rotate drivers. He emphasized that the closely matched field, coupled with the significant advancements the team has made in vehicle performance over the past year, warranted a reassessment of the driving lineup. The aim is not only to maximize the potential in the present season but also to prepare strategically for future races, particularly with the forthcoming 2026 season being characterized as a critical juncture for the team.

The transition for Jack Doohan, son of the legendary five-time MotoGP champion Mick Doohan, has been described as a challenging experience. Doohan expressed his understanding of the team’s decision, acknowledging the importance of their long-term goals while pledging to support his team from his position as the first-choice reserve driver during this interim period. His professionalism and commitment to the team’s success remain evident as he prepares to assist in any way possible, despite the disappointment of not being on the track in the upcoming races.

Colapinto conveyed enthusiasm about his new opportunity, indicating a commitment to adapt rapidly to the demands of racing in Formula 1. He recognized that the upcoming trio of races at Imola, Monaco, and Barcelona represents an intense and formidable challenge for all involved. His objective is to hit the ground running and deliver exemplary results, showcasing his skill and readiness to compete at a high level.

This announcement comes in the wake of another significant development within the team: the resignation of team principal Oliver Oakes. Following his departure, Briatore is set to assumed greater responsibilities, a move that some insiders believe reflects his long-standing influence as the key decision-maker within the organization.

Overall, the decision to replace Doohan with Colapinto signals Alpine’s commitment to fostering talent and optimizing performance, while also addressing challenges posed by the highly competitive racing environment. The impending races will serve as a crucial testing ground for both drivers and the team’s strategic direction as they aim to secure their place among the leading contenders in Formula 1. As fans and experts alike anticipate the unfolding drama, the next few weeks promise to be a particularly vital period for Alpine and its drivers.
