The vibrant and pixelated universe of Minecraft is soon set to make its transition to the big screen. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for “A Minecraft Movie,” a live-action adaptation of the immensely popular video game. The film features a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Jack Black.
In the newly released trailer, Momoa, sporting a striking shoulder-length wig with choppy bangs, immerses himself in the Minecraft world alongside co-stars Brooks, “Wednesday” star Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Their journey leads them through a fantastical adventure where they encounter a variety of recognizable Minecraft characters, including bleating sheep, mischievous piglins, and a character named Steve played by Black.
“Anything you can dream about here, you can make,” Black remarks in the trailer, as the iconic tune “The Magical Mystery Tour” by The Beatles resonates in the background.
The official synopsis for the film reveals that Momoa portrays Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Along with his companions, he is depicted as grappling with ordinary dilemmas before being unexpectedly whisked through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a whimsical and cubic wonderland fueled by imagination.
To find their way back home, Garrison and his friends must rise to the occasion, “be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world,” the synopsis continues.
Directed by Jared Hess, known for works such as “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Masterminds,” “A Minecraft Movie” marks the first live-action adaptation of the beloved video game, which first launched in 2011. Notably, Warner Bros. Pictures, like CNN, is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery.
For those who are unfamiliar, the Minecraft video game offers players the opportunity to explore and create unique worlds by constructing various structures using three-dimensional virtual blocks.
“A Minecraft Movie” is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.
